Erlina, a 53-year-old scavenger, lives a simple life in a small rented room. Her only companions are the stray cats she has taken in. Despite her own limited resources, she prioritizes the well-being of these animals, often going without food herself to ensure they are fed.

“I’ve been living alone for a long time, and the longer I stay, the more lonely I get. That’s why I started bringing cats home. Some people say I’m crazy for taking care of so many cats, especially when I can barely afford to feed myself. But now, I’m not lonely anymore,” says Grandma Yeyen.

Erlina, also known as Grandma Djong Ye Yan (53 years old), lives alone in a very modest rental house. For companionship, she has the abandoned cats she cares for.

Grandma Yeyen makes a living by scavenging, earning a maximum of $2 per day. Despite walking more than 10 kilometers every day to get enough for food, her income is barely enough to survive.

Most of Grandma’s small earnings go towards feeding and providing medicine for the rescued cats she has taken in. Over the years, she has cared for around 100 cats, all funded by her scavenging work.

Currently, dozens of cats are living with her in the small rented house. Many of them are underweight, and some have injuries from being hit by vehicles. Grandma says she only lets go of the cats when she sees that they are healthy again.

Despite her best efforts, Grandma can’t continue to care for every stray cat she encounters. Even now, she often survives on just rice and tofu to ease her hunger.

#KindSouls, Grandma Yeyen’s selflessness and determination to care for these animals despite her own struggles is an inspiration. Let’s help her continue her mission of kindness and provide for her and the cats she’s so devoted to.
