At 85 years old, Abah Taryo still walks 15km every day, carrying a 40kg load of cilok just to earn a few rupiahs. His frail legs tremble with each step, and exhaustion often causes him to collapse. But despite his age and worsening heart disease, he has no choice—this is his only way to survive.

Selling cilok should be a simple job, but for Abah, it’s a daily struggle. Many people hesitate to buy from him, seeing his weak condition and the poor state of his money.

He earns just 200 rupiah (SGD 0.02) per cilok, and even after a long day from morning to evening, he often returns home with unsold food.

Since cilok can’t be kept overnight, he either gives it away or eats it with his wife—sometimes with nothing but plain rice and salt.

On good days, he makes 50,000 rupiah (SGD 5), barely enough to cover rice, electricity, and his much-needed medication. But when the rain comes, sales stop, and he sometimes earns as little as 5,000 rupiah (SGD 0.50).

Abah Taryo has worked tirelessly all his life, but in his old age, every step is painful, and his body is failing him. He dreams of a day when he doesn’t have to walk long distances just to survive.
