At 85 years old, Grandpa Akim lives completely alone—no wife, no children to care for him, just an old, crumbling house that barely shelters him from the outside world. His only son left ten years ago and never returned. His wife passed away 25 years ago. Now, he fends for himself, surviving on what little he can earn from weaving bamboo baskets and making ropes.

With his frail body, bent and weakened from years of malnutrition, he struggles to stand, let alone walk. Every day, he works tirelessly, yet his earnings barely reach 6,000 IDR (0.50 SGD) per day—only enough to buy betel leaves to chew, not even a proper meal. If no one buys his crafts, he goes to bed hungry.

His home, damaged by an earthquake in 2020, is on the verge of collapse. Every night, he sleeps in fear, knowing that another tremor could bury him beneath the broken walls. The weight of loneliness and hardship nearly cost him his life—he was once found unconscious for two days due to illness and hunger, yet he refused to go to the hospital because he had no money.

To make matters worse, one day while selling his crafts, he was hit by a speeding motorcycle and lost consciousness. When he woke up, he was back home, bruised and in pain, with a kind-hearted nurse treating his wounds for free. Yet, even after all this suffering, Grandpa Akim never complains. He keeps working, keeps walking miles just to sell his baskets, clinging to the little dignity and strength he has left.
