“I’m still breathing… but for how long?”
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Bernardus Wahyu is only 16, but every breath he takes feels like a battle. Diagnosed with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), a rare and incurable genetic condition that weakens every muscle in his body, Bernard now lives entirely dependent on his parents’ care. He can no longer walk, lift a cup, or even sit for too long without pain. Even the simple act of breathing has become a struggle.
His father gave up his job to return home and care for him. Now, he works as a part-time church organist and helps the local community, but only earns about $3/day—barely enough to survive. His mother stays home full-time to care for Bernard, who can’t do anything on his own anymore.
Despite all this, Bernard is a bright, determined student. He only attends school for half a day because his body tires easily—but still managed to place third in his class. He dreams of finishing school, of living longer… of simply being able to breathe.
Recently, his condition worsened. The bones in his ribcage are bending inward, pressing on his lungs. Oxygen tanks are no longer enough. Doctors have warned that without a home ventilator, Bernard may one day fall asleep and never wake up. But a ventilator costs up to $9,400—something his family simply cannot afford.
His parents are doing everything they can. But now, they need your help.
To keep Bernard breathing.
To keep him alive.
To give him a chance to keep dreaming.
