Life used to be normal for them. Vijaya a/p Kuppusamy (58) and Shunmugam a/l Thulasci (63) were a hardworking couple, living independently and raising their child with love and care.

But everything changed when both were struck by chronic illnesses that took away their ability to work.

Vijaya has long been battling Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE), an autoimmune disease attacking her internal organs. The disease caused her bones to deteriorate so badly that both her hip joints had to be replaced with metal. Her vision has also deteriorated to the point where she is now nearly blind.

SLE also triggered severe skin issues, worsened by exposure to biohazard chemicals at her former workplace. She previously underwent regular treatments like MRI, X-rays, and CT scans, but due to financial hardship, Vijaya had to stop her physiotherapy—a critical part of her ability to move and remain independent.

Her husband, Shunmugam, meanwhile, was suddenly struck by Parkinson’s during the COVID-19 pandemic. One morning, he woke up and realized he could no longer stand. His body trembled uncontrollably, and his movements slowed drastically, as if suffering a stroke.

His condition has continued to worsen—he can no longer work, his speech has become sluggish, and his mental sharpness is fading. He is now fully dependent on others to care for him.

Once able to support themselves, they are now without any income and rely solely on their nephew—who is also struggling financially.

Their hardship grew heavier when their child, still in high school, had to drop out of school because the family could no longer afford the education costs.

With rising medical expenses for both Vijaya and Shunmugam, and the need for daily essentials and transportation to hospital appointments, they are at their limit. Without help, they do not know how they will survive.

They are living through extremely difficult days, and your support—no matter how small—can help ease their burden. Kind hearts, let’s come together to help this husband and wife in their time of need.
