“Dad… it’s so hard living without you. Putra and I are doing our best for Mom and our little sister,” said Denis softly.

Denis (15) and Putra (8) are two brothers forced to become the breadwinners of their family. Just three months ago, they lost their beloved father to aggressive cancer. For over a year, they had fought alongside him—selling snacks, praying, doing everything they could—until the cancer took his life.

Even before their father passed, Denis and Putra were already helping to raise money for his treatment. Now, without him, they must work even harder just to survive and support their youngest sibling, Zahra, and continue their education.

This small family lives on borrowed land. Any day, the landowner could reclaim it, leaving them homeless. Their mother now stays home to care for Zahra, who often falls sick—especially since their father’s passing.

“I won’t let Mom work,” Denis says firmly.

“She’s too weak since Dad passed. I don’t want to lose another parent… We still need her.”

Although only three months have passed, life without their father feels unbearably heavy. Denis and Putra often visit his grave, pouring out their hearts and their struggles. It’s their way of coping with the weight of becoming men too soon.

After school, until the sun sets, the brothers sell snacks around their neighborhood. Under the blazing heat, they walk tirelessly, hoping someone will buy. On lucky days, they sell a few. On others, they return home empty-handed.
