For 15 years, Kadek Sumertayasa, 39, has worked tirelessly to support his wife, Putu Siska, even though they live apart due to their jobs. Kadek works at a furniture factory in Badung, while his wife, a newly appointed civil servant, lives two hours away in Buleleng. Despite the distance, Kadek never misses a weekend to be with her.

One late night after working overtime, Kadek went out to buy dinner near his company dormitory. While overtaking a car, he was suddenly struck by a speeding vehicle from the opposite direction. The impact flung him off his motorcycle, leaving him unconscious and severely injured.

He was rushed to the nearest hospital by locals, but due to limited funds, he had to be transferred to the public hospital in Buleleng, where his wife resides. That night, Putu had been waiting anxiously for her husband’s call, unaware of the accident. At midnight, she received a phone call from an unknown number: “Your husband is in the hospital.”

Kadek had suffered a mild head injury and a serious fracture in his left hip. Doctors diagnosed him with a femoral neck fracture, warning that the blood flow to his hip was cut off. Without immediate surgery, Kadek risks permanent paralysis.

Putu made the two-hour trip in the middle of the night to be by his side. The couple had to borrow $375 just to cover the cost of the ambulance and CT scan.
