Baby Mohamad Ayyash Mateen has been fighting for his life since the day he was born. Diagnosed with Cri du chat syndrome, he suffers from a series of severe health complications, including a hole in his heart, fused kidneys, chronic lung disease, swollen kidneys, and bleeding in the brain. His body is also extremely vulnerable to infections.

Mateen was hospitalized for six long months in the NICU and has only recently been allowed to go home. But even now, he can’t survive without an oxygen machine. Without it, he gasps for air and becomes dangerously breathless.

Although he’s now outside the hospital walls, his struggle is far from over. His growth is severely stunted. Doctors have warned that he may experience delays in speaking and walking. At just seven months old, Mateen is unable to do anything on his own, and the road ahead is filled with uncertainty. In the near future, he will need surgery on his kidneys and further treatment for the bleeding in his brain.

Mateen’s parents are doing everything they can to care for him while also raising his three-year-old brother. But the cost of Mateen’s treatment, milk, diapers, medical equipment, and hospital visits is far beyond what they can manage. They’ve tried their best—but they can’t do this alone anymore.

“I’m heartbroken,” his father said quietly. “But I’ve done everything I can to help him get better.”

Now, they’re reaching out to #KindSouls around the world. Your support could mean the difference between life and loss for baby Mateen.
