Thalia Inara binti Mohammad Akmal Afiq is only 1 year and 9 months old, but her life has been filled with unimaginable struggles since the very first day she was born.

Diagnosed with a hole in the heart (PAVSD) and absence of a pulmonary valve, Thalia was not like other babies — she couldn’t cry loudly or feed comfortably. From the start, her tiny body relied on oxygen and medications just to breathe — just to survive.

Unlike healthy newborns, Thalia wasn’t allowed to go home. She spent the first 3 months of her life in the NICU, under constant monitoring and surrounded by hospital machines that essentially became her second life support.

At just 1 month old, Thalia underwent a BT shunt surgery — a procedure to help improve blood flow to her lungs. By 3 months, she had to go through a stenting procedure, and she still requires more major surgeries: to close the hole in her heart and to implant a pulmonary valve, which she was born without.

Even after enduring two major operations, Thalia still depends on daily medication and frequent follow-ups. Her immune system is extremely weak, making her prone to infections. Fevers, coughs, and various illnesses often send her back to the hospital again and again. Her little body is tested repeatedly — but her spirit is extraordinary.

Behind Thalia’s suffering stands a devoted father. Since her birth, he has been the sole breadwinner for the family, while her mother had to quit her job to care for Thalia full-time.

Every hospital trip comes with the burden of travel costs, accommodation, and meals. Some treatments last for days, sometimes even weeks — and all of this requires money they simply don’t have.
