Since 6 months in the womb, Aulin Huwannur Hawa was already diagnosed with acute lymphoid leukemia, the most common type of blood cancer in children. Her suffering grew heavier because she was also born with hydrocephalus, a buildup of fluid in the brain that causes her head to keep enlarging.
Since birth, she has had to go back and forth to the hospital every week for treatment. At one point, the skin on her head even split and peeled, exposing the inside of her skull.
When she was two months old, the signs became even more obvious. Large veins bulged on her head, and almost every day Aulin cried in agony while clutching her head.
The fluid that kept increasing made her head swell larger, her eyes pulled upward, and her breathing became more labored. Until today, this poor baby has already undergone 12 surgeries, but her tiny head continues to enlarge again and again.
Now, baby Aulin must undergo another surgery to drain the fluid in her head, along with repositioning her skull bones. On top of that, she must also go through chemotherapy for her acute blood cancer.
Sadly, her parents are still struggling to find additional funds, because many of Aulin’s medical needs are not covered by BPJS (Indonesia’s national health insurance). Her father, Mr. Widi, works only as a call driver with a daily income of Rp50,000–150,000 (around $3–10), and that’s only if there are orders. With such a limited income, it is nearly impossible for him to cover the huge cost of his daughter’s treatment.
But for the sake of Aulin, Mr. Widi never gives up. He even sells bottled water on the streets while waiting for his little girl to undergo treatment in the hospital.
#KindHearrs, Aulin desperately needs our helping hands. Let’s be her hope so she can grow healthy like other children.
