For two decades, Grandma Rumi (72) has been the sole caregiver of her son, Rohiri (48), who became severely disabled after falling from a coconut tree. At her old age, she still shoulders everything alone—her strength fading, yet her love never wavering.
Every day in their small hut, she wakes up to care not only for her frail body but also for her son who can no longer walk, speak, or live independently. With no insurance or pension, her little savings were long gone on medical costs.
Her work is risky and exhausting. Once, a falling coconut left a scar on her temple, but she kept going despite the pain. Age brings constant joint aches and fatigue, but she endures in silence, putting her son’s needs first.
Their daily struggles are overwhelming—healthcare, adult diapers, medicine, and special milk are often unaffordable. For food, Grandma Rumi gathers fallen coconuts to sell for rice and sometimes survives on cassava leaves or just salt with rice.
Through tears, she told us, “I just want my son to be free from pain…” Despite her frailty, she continues to fight for him, night after night, fueled only by a mother’s love.
