Rafi Simbolon’s life changed in an instant. On his way home from work, the teenager was struck by a truck, dragged beneath it, and crushed. His left leg suffered a deep open wound, and his right leg was so badly damaged that it had to be amputated. Through the agony, Rafi stayed conscious, crying out for help and thinking only one thing: “I have to stay alive for my mom.”
Rafi is the eldest of two siblings living with their mother in a small rented house in Berastagi. His parents divorced a decade ago, and his father has been absent ever since. At just 15, Rafi left school to help his mother, Asdianti, who earns meager wages as a farm laborer. He worked in the fields, carrying heavy baskets of crops for only about $3 a day—barely enough to get by, but it was his way of caring for his family.
One Sunday evening in late June, tragedy struck. Rafi’s thin body collided with a truck, was dragged beneath it, and run over by the rear wheels. He survived, but both legs were destroyed. Rafi has already undergone one surgery and remains hospitalized, aided by the insurance. But medical needs go far beyond surgery: daily care, rehabilitation, transportation, food, and other essentials are constant expenses. His mother cannot work full-time because she stays at his bedside.
There are no valuables left to sell, no savings to draw from. Each day is simply about surviving. To his mother, Rafi is irreplaceable—her eldest child, her protector, and the light that keeps their small family going.
Rafi’s mother has started a fundraiser to cover his ongoing treatment and living costs during recovery. #KindSouls, will you help Rafi heal and rebuild his life despite the loss of a limb? Every contribution, no matter how small, brings him hope for a future beyond this tragedy.
