One-Legged Father Sells Fermented Cassava in the Rain, Struggles to Feed His Orphaned Son
Fundraiser
Lingkar Peduli Indonesia is a non government organization who help people in need.

In the pouring rain, Mr. Sumarni sat hugging his shivering, hungry son. In front of them were several unsold packets of fermented cassava.

“If I go home empty-handed, I can’t buy my son his favorite meal. I promised I’d get him rice and chicken…” said Mr. Sumar softly.

Mr. Sumar, 50, lost his leg to amputation. Two years ago, diabetes caused his foot to rot, forcing doctors to remove it. Despite his pain and physical limitations, he keeps pushing forward—walking 10 kilometers every day with a cane to support his only son, Rizal.

But most days, his goods don’t sell. Sudden rain often soaks him through, and when his fermented cassava doesn’t sell, he has no choice but to go without food—he simply doesn’t have the money to eat. Since his wife’s passing, Mr. Sumar has had to play both mother and father. With his meager income, he can only afford one packet of rice a day, shared between him and his son. They often sleep in mosques or under shop canopies, enduring the cold nights just so they can sell again the next morning.

“What breaks my heart the most is seeing Rizal so tired while selling. He should be playing and learning like other kids… but instead, he’s helping me earn money for his school fees,” said Mr. Sumar.

Thankfully, Rizal understands his father’s struggles. Every day, he guides his father along as they sell together. Even with his cane, Mr. Sumar can still stumble and fall at any moment.

#KindSouls, let’s come together to help Mr. Sumar so he can keep fighting without worrying about food, shelter, or his son’s education. Your kindness means the world to them.
