Life has been unbearably hard for Grandpa Aton. At 73 years old, he still works tirelessly every single day just to have something to eat. Saddeningly, he does all this despite having a deformed right hand and losing sight in one eye.
But Grandpa Aton doesn’t just work to survive himself — he works to care for his wife, who has been ill for months.
Every morning, after tending to his wife’s needs, Grandpa sets out around 9 a.m. and walks for miles with his frail, trembling legs. His body is thin and weak, his stomach often empty for days.
Selling vegetables in such a condition isn’t easy. Grandpa often faints from exhaustion, unable to bear the fatigue. Worse, few people buy his vegetables. Many even turn their faces away when he walks by, quietly offering his small bundles of greens.
On a good day, Grandpa sells about five bundles — earning less than $1. It’s barely enough for food and his wife’s medicine. Only if there’s any left does he finally eat something himself.
“Sometimes I don’t sell much. But I’m still grateful because my wife can still eat and take her medicine,” Grandpa whispered softly.
As if that’s not enough, Grandpa also worries about his crumbling home. The old straw-walled shack is falling apart, full of holes. When it rains, the water pours in — leaving him drenched and shivering through the night.
Despite all these hardships, Grandpa Aton never gives up. He keeps going with the little strength he has. His biggest hope is to open a small shop at home so he won’t have to leave his sick wife alone.
He also dreams of being able to take her to the hospital — because it breaks his heart to see her suffering every day.
#KindSouls, it’s heartbreaking to see this elderly couple living in such hardship during their final years. Will you help ease Grandpa Aton’s burden — so he can live decently, have enough to eat, and take his beloved wife for treatment?
