“Mom… I want to get better. I want to play like my friends.”
That soft plea pierced his mother’s heart like lightning in broad daylight.

At an age that should be filled with laughter and play, little Okta instead endures unbearable pain. His tiny body is covered in rashes and wounds that look like burns. His skin peels, bleeds, and stings every moment of the day.

For nearly nine years, Okta has battled a rare skin disease that forces him to spray his body with water every two hours. If he doesn’t, the itching and burning become so severe that he cries in agony until his skin bleeds.

His mother never leaves his side, even though their savings are long gone. His father works as a mobile tempeh seller, while his mother helps him sell just to make enough for daily meals.

In the past year alone, Okta has been in and out of the hospital 20 times. The most heartbreaking part is how people, not understanding his condition, have cruelly called him a “monster.” Now, he hides at home most of the time—too afraid to be laughed at because of his wounds.
