Apo Pipa (73) prays every day to Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha, hoping she will have food to eat. Often, she survives on leftover rice or almost-stale bread from neighbors, and if there is nothing, she drinks water to get by. Her life is quiet and lonely, with no family and no bustling table to share meals. Her body is weakening, and her eyes are slowly losing their light.
Oma Amboi (75), a former Mandarin tutor, lost her students after the COVID-19 pandemic and now struggles with near blindness, frequent illness, and fading consciousness. Simple daily tasks have become dangerous as her sight fails and she often falls while walking alone.
Oma Tjang Siu Lae (70) survives by collecting bottles and cardboard from the streets. Her frail body can no longer endure long walks, a result of past accidents, yet she continues to work tirelessly to put food on her plate. Often, she relies on the kindness of neighbors or strangers to eat. At night, she finds shelter wherever she can, wearing only thin clothing, exhausted and exposed.
No elderly person should endure such hardship. Together, we can help these women secure safe shelter, regular meals, and a more dignified life in their later years.
