Severe flash floods and landslides have struck three provinces in Sumatra, Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra, impacting 33 cities and regencies.

Triggered by extreme weather linked to the Tropical Cyclone Senyar system, the disaster has caused widespread destruction, massive displacement, and heartbreaking loss of life.

According to Indonesia’s National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), 164 people have been confirmed dead as of Friday (28 Nov), with dozens still missing.

  • North Sumatra: 116 dead, 42 missing
  • Aceh: 25 dead, 25 missing
  • West Sumatra: 23 dead, 12 missing

Beyond the rising death toll, the disaster has uprooted livelihoods, destroyed homes, and isolated entire communities.

Thousands Displaced, Entire Districts Underwater

In South Tapanuli, floods and landslides forced 2,851 people to evacuate, leaving 8 dead and 58 injured. Damages include 50 homes destroyed, 2 bridges collapsed, and disrupted access across 11 districts. In Central Tapanuli, 1,902 homes in 9 districts are submerged. Emergency tents and basic supplies are now being distributed as families seek safety.

Sibolga City has also been severely hit, with multiple sub-districts affected by flooding and landslides following over 48 hours of continuous rainfall.

West Sumatra: 13 Districts Hit Simultaneously

Flash floods and landslides struck 13 areas, including Padang, Bukittinggi, Padang Panjang, Tanah Datar, and Pasaman. Tens of thousands of homes are flooded, major roads are cut off, and evacuation efforts continue. In Padang:

  • 20,983 people are affected in Koto Tangah
  • Over 6,000 more across other districts are impacted

Critical facilities like schools, mosques, clinics, and national roads have suffered severe damage.

Aceh Declares Emergency Status in 9 Districts

Widespread flooding has displaced 46,893 people, including 1,497 who have been forced into shelters. Water levels reach up to 80 cm, submerging homes, public facilities, and farmland.

The heaviest flooding is in East Aceh, Aceh Singkil, and North Aceh, where overflowing rivers and unstable geology continue to threaten residents.
