Help Abah Dadang, an Elderly Father Tirelessly Selling Books for His Son with Cerebral Palsy

“As long as I can still push the wheelchair, I will fight for anything for Yusup,” said Abah Dadang, 58.

Abah Dadang’s love for his son Yusup, who has special needs, will never fade. Even though he is nearly 60 years old, he believes he is still strong enough to earn a living. If not Abah, then who else could Yusup rely on? At 26 years old, Yusup can only sit silently in his wheelchair. He suffers from cerebral palsy, or brain paralysis.

Every single day, without fail, Yusup accompanies Abah as he sells Islamic guidebooks. With patience, Abah pushes the worn-out wheelchair that always carries his son by his side. It would surely be easier for Abah to sell alone, without pushing the weight of an adult man. But how could Abah possibly leave Yusup alone at home?

There is no one to care for Yusup. His mother has passed away, and his siblings already have families of their own. Life is hard for them as well. If Yusup needs anything, he cannot do anything but roll his body, he cannot manage on his own.

Sadly, the buyer of his books is often not much. On days when someone is kind enough to buy Abah’s books, he might make only Rp30.000. But when no one even glances his way, Abah and Yusup are forced to endure their hunger with only water to drink. How long will this hardship continue for them?

While selling, Abah often looks at Yusup’s wheelchair. If only his books sold well, maybe he could save enough to buy Yusup a new wheelchair, so that when this one breaks, there would be a spare. If he were truly fortunate, Abah could even bring Yusup for treatment. He also often thinks about their home’s pitiful condition. The kitchen has collapsed, the roof leaks, and the walls are falling apart.

To keep the wind and rain from reaching Yusup, Abah patches the holes with plastic and scraps of wood. That is all he can do. Sometimes Abah feels he hasn’t been able to give Yusup a decent life. His age has advanced, but their financial situation has never improved.

Guys, would you like to help Abah and Yusup?
