His hand is broken and stiff, and he walks with a limp because several bones in his leg were fractured. Yet Grandpa Entoy continues to push himself every day just so his wife, who suffered a stroke, can still have food on the table.
It’s heartbreaking — several of Grandpa Entoy’s (79) bones were fractured years ago when he worked as a wood carrier. He once fell while carrying heavy logs on his shoulders. Since then, he has never received proper treatment. He only relied on simple herbal remedies.
Because of that, Grandpa still cannot walk normally. Sometimes, he even has to drag himself across the floor because his body is no longer strong enough. But despite all these limitations, he never stops fighting — especially when it comes to taking care of his ailing wife.
His wife suffers from a stroke and can no longer walk. Parts of her body are stiff and unable to move. Grandma can only lie weakly inside their small home.
To survive day to day, Grandpa forces his weak and limping body to work as a gnetum gnemon leaf picker. For every 1kg of gnetum gnemon leaves he gathers, he earns only 30 cents.
But because of his limited strength, he can only pick around 3kg a day. He uses that meagre amount of money to buy rice so his wife can eat and not go hungry.
And because the income from picking leaves is unreliable, Grandpa even looks for extra work by going around selling the leaves himself. Exhausted after farming the whole day, he walks for kilometres, hoping someone will buy them.
It breaks the heart to see Grandpa and Grandma struggling like this in their old age. They often go hungry for days because Grandpa’s earnings are only enough for a single meal.
#KindPeople, would you help Grandpa and Grandma live a bit more comfortably in their old age? Let’s help them so they don’t have to go hungry anymore.
