At 68 years old, Lie Djoe Sing — lovingly called Akong Sing — has spent almost his entire life in loneliness. He once had the chance to marry the woman he loved, but he gave up that dream.
“Back then, I knew I couldn’t give her comfort. I didn’t even have a house, let alone the means for a stable life,” he said softly.
Now, Akong Sing lives alone in a narrow alley, behind an abandoned house that has no electricity. Each night, he lights a single candle to keep away the darkness as he tries to sleep. At his age, he should be resting, but instead he still works tirelessly. He spends his days handcrafting wooden chairs, hoping someone will buy them. But more often than not, the chairs pile up unsold for months, leaving him without food or money.
Sometimes, a kind neighbor asks him to fix a broken door or repair some furniture. On those days, he earns a little cash or receives food to fill his empty stomach. But when no one calls, he goes hungry. His frail hands tremble, but he pushes through each day.
With a trembling voice, he once whispered: “I just want to feel peace in this world before heaven calls me to my final rest.”
At nearly 70 years old, Akong Sing shouldn’t have to fight this hard just to survive. Yet here he is — alone, with no family by his side, struggling to keep going. #KindSouls, together we can help ease the burden of this elderly man who has carried so much sorrow in silence.
