“My goods often don’t sell, dear… even though my body is in pain. I keep selling because I want to continue my treatment…” — Amma Liem
Being able to receive medical treatment again—that is the only thing Amma Liem Ek Kwie, affectionately known as Amma Liem (78), wishes for. When she was still healthy, she worked as a domestic helper and cleaner.
Her life changed after she fell and severely injured her leg, which required metal pins to be inserted. Due to financial constraints, Amma could not continue follow-up treatment. Until now, her leg still aches frequently and continues to weaken, making it difficult for her to move.
Despite the pain, Amma walks about 5 kilometers every day with the help of crutches, selling coffee and bottled water. “I go around the market every day. The weather is very hot… I often feel dizzy, and my leg hurts more and more,” she said.
Amma keeps going because she does not want to burden her child, who is also struggling financially while raising children alone as a single parent. Together with her two children and grandchildren, Amma has been living for nearly 20 years in a small rented room measuring just 3 x 6 meters.
Living in such hardship makes it difficult for Amma to attend regular hospital check-ups, even though the metal pin in her leg causes unbearable pain.
Each day, Amma earns only 10 cents from a cup of coffee or a bottle of water she sells. It is a very small amount, yet it is all she has to survive.
#KindHearts, please don’t let Amma face this struggle alone. May God’s love flow through your kindness, so that she can receive treatment and live a more dignified life. Share your blessings with Amma.
