Darrell — that’s how this tiny baby boy is lovingly called. He is the first child of Mr. Dino and Mrs. Siska. At only 4 months old, his body has already become frail and severely underweight.

Darrell once weighed 3.7 kg, but now he is only 2.4 kg. Not because of lack of nutrition, but because he has had to undergo multiple surgeries to fight a rare and painful intestinal disorder.

“At first, Darrell had to be operated on because he vomited thick green liquid. The doctors found his intestines were problematic and had to be cut. They were supposed to place a colostomy bag, but instead, his surgical stitches tore open…”

“His intestines were exposed… what broke my heart the most was seeing that wound left open for 10 days without proper treatment,” shared Mrs. Siska tearfully.

For months, Darrell has been in and out of the hospital. He still needs another surgery, but the schedule is pending. Every hospital visit requires his parents to borrow the village ambulance since they don’t own a vehicle.

“There are many medical needs not covered by insurance — special milk, diapers, stoma bags, wound care supplies. We must pay out of pocket, but my husband only works odd jobs with wages less than SGD 200/month,” continued Mrs. Siska.

Every night, Mrs. Siska cries silently, praying her firstborn will recover. Darrell is the reason his parents keep holding on.
