“Sometimes it makes me sad when I see my friends go home from school to play, getting picked up by their parents. While I have to go home from school and sell toys, the money is used to buy medicine for my mom and for food. But I’m grateful, God chose me, it means I’m stronger than other kids,” says Agus.

The story of Agus (9) is truly heart-wrenching! Imagine, at such a young age, he has to face the painful reality of life. It’s undeniable, Agus feels envious of his friends who can play without a care in the world with their parents, while he must struggle to survive with his paralyzed mother, who also has burn wounds from a terrible fire.

“Dad left us and went far away, he rarely sends us money… maybe he doesn’t have any,” says Agus, holding back tears.

The terrible fire caused Agus’ mother to suffer permanent disabilities, resulting in her skin on both hands and legs staying wet all the time, causing constant pain, and limiting her movement.

Even though he’s still in grade 5, Agus already has to work to support the family and survive. While his friends his age go home from school to study and play, he has to find ways to earn money, care for his disabled mother, and pay for her medical treatment.

He goes from alley to alley, selling toys using his small cart until late in the evening, sometimes even until night. For him, he can’t go home without earning any money.

Most of the time, he rarely makes more than a dollar a day. He uses that money to buy rice, and saves the rest for his mother’s medical expenses. Often, despite his efforts, no one buys his toys, and he leaves feeling disappointed.
