Grandma Ayu often has to stop and rest, sometimes even falling asleep by the roadside. Her frail body and unsteady legs can barely carry her forward, yet she has no choice if she wants to buy rice and survive.
“My vegetables often don’t sell, dear. Sometimes I only sell two bundles—it’s not enough to buy rice. Often, I eat yesterday’s leftover rice that’s almost spoiled…”, she says softly.
At 85 years old, Grandma Ayu Sanem still roams the streets selling vegetables she picks herself each morning. She lives alone with no family to rely on, forcing her to fight every day to stay alive. After dawn prayers, she gathers vegetables from nearby swamps and rice fields, then walks from village to village selling them for only 30 cents per bundle. Even at that low price, sales are rare—and some days she sells nothing at all.
She often walks for miles, only to return home with unsold vegetables, her stomach empty. Hunger has made her thinner and weaker, surviving only on stale rice. Her dream is to have a small food stall at home so she won’t have to wander the streets every day.
