This is Grandma Juminah, a 79-year-old woman who is blind and paralyzed. She has lived alone ever since her husband passed away five years ago from an unknown illness—he never had the chance to seek medical treatment.
In her small bamboo house with dirt floors, Grandma Juminah can only hold herself tight whenever the cold night wind blows. She survives solely on the occasional help from villagers, though the help doesn’t come every day.
“Grandma, what do you do when you’re hungry and no one comes to help?” a volunteer asked during a home visit.
“I crawl… slowly… to pick wild plants near the house so I have something to eat,” she whispered.
Her condition has caused her frail body to grow weaker. The little food she eats has almost no nutrition. She spends her days lying on a bamboo bed without a mattress, unable to move freely.
She does have a son living in the same village. But he lives separately—because he has been suffering from leprosy for nearly 10 years and doesn’t want to risk infecting his mother.
He cannot work and cannot care for her.
Grandma Juminah lives each day alone, hungry, sick, and vulnerable.
