For the past two years, 73-year-old Grandma Atun has been lying weak inside her dilapidated, damp home. She became paralyzed after a fall but has no money for treatment.
She lives with her daughter, Lisnawati, who suffers from a mental disorder — often emotional, difficult to reason with, and only occasionally able to help her paralyzed mother. Grandma rarely asks for help, fearing her daughter’s anger.
Her husband passed away 30 years ago, leaving her to survive on government aid of $23 every three months — far from enough to cover daily needs. Because of this, she often borrows rice from a small shop. Sadly, her debts have piled up, and she is no longer allowed to borrow food.
There are days when Grandma Atun doesn’t eat at all. If she’s lucky, she fills her empty stomach with boiled cassava leaves picked from nearby bushes.
With her paralyzed body, she often has no choice but to relieve herself in bed. Her mentally ill daughter sometimes helps her move, but other times lashes out in anger for no reason.
Kind souls, let’s help Grandma Atun live a more decent and dignified life.
