“My son was hit by a truck, both of his legs were broken… now the infection is severe,” said Grandma Rambat (69), holding back tears.
Since dawn, she has been walking from place to place selling broomsticks for 30 cents per bundle. Not for herself—but to pay for her son’s medical treatment. Her son, Ponidi (41), is now completely dependent on her.
Last year, Ponidi, who worked as a factory laborer, was hit by a truck on his way to work. Both of his legs were badly broken, and he fell into a coma for a week.
After he regained consciousness, life was never the same. His legs slowly began to rot, the tissue turning black. Doctors urged immediate surgery to prevent amputation.
That is why his mother stepped in as the breadwinner. She travels from village to village, selling broomsticks under the scorching sun and pouring rain. Every rupiah she earns is saved for her son.
“All I want is for Ponidi to walk again,” she whispered.
But her earnings are not enough. They often go hungry just to survive, let alone afford surgery and treatment for the worsening infection in Ponidi’s legs.
Dear #KindHearts, Grandma Rambat has no one else. Now, we are her only hope.
