Left Alone for 15 Years, Grandma Suti Battles Hunger and Sickness in the Forest

“I’m hungry… this stale rice is all I have,” whispered Grandma Suti (73), an elderly woman living completely alone in an old house left behind by her parents, deep inside the forest.

For more than 15 years, this poor grandmother has depended on a small plastic bucket as her walking aid. Ever since she fell many years ago, she has been almost paralyzed — her legs weakened and slowly lost their function. Even walking three meters without help is already her greatest achievement.

In the past, Grandma Suti worked as a daily farm laborer. But as her body grew weaker, she could no longer work. To survive, she relies on what the forest provides — cassava leaves, wild bananas, or edible tubers. She gathers whatever she can, dragging her legs while clinging to the same small bucket that helps her move through the forest floor.

Because she lives completely alone with no family to help, villagers who see her from afar often assume she is “not in her right mind.”

But the truth is, she is simply an elderly woman struggling to survive with almost nothing. She never married, and her siblings live in distant towns — never calling, never visiting, never sending help.

Clean water is a luxury for her. Because she cannot pay the bills, the water supply to her house is often cut off. She drinks only what she can collect from rainwater. The village occasionally gives her 10 kg of rice every three months — which she rations as carefully as possible, eating it even when it has spoiled because she has no other choice.

Her frequent chest tightness and dizziness are never treated. Not because she doesn’t want to — but because she simply cannot afford it. So she forces herself to sleep, hoping the pain will ease by morning.

In her old age, Grandma Suti lives in total silence and hardship, fighting alone with what little strength she has left — with nothing but a plastic bucket, and a fragile hope she refuses to let go.

#DearKindPeople, let us come together to help Grandma Suti survive her final years with dignity despite her overwhelming hardships.
