Every morning, Grandpa Juma tightens his sandals and picks up a bag full of books, hoping today might be better than yesterday.

He is over 70 years old. His back is no longer strong. His legs, one bent and painful, shake when he walks. But still, he pushes himself to walk up to 10 kilometers a day under the harsh sun, weaving through neighborhoods or standing at busy intersections, just to sell a few books.

“I only make about $0.03 profit per book… but if I charge more, no one will want to buy,” he says softly. And even at such a small price, people often walk past without even a glance. Some days, he returns home with just $1 or $2 in his pocket. On bad days? Nothing at all.

His wife is sick and in need of regular treatment. She’s the reason he keeps going. Every book he sells isn’t just about surviving, it’s about keeping her alive.

Even when his legs ache and his body begs for rest, Grandpa Juma can’t stop. He skips meals, walks in worn-out sandals, and fights off exhaustion daily… all for the chance to make just a few dollars more.

The profit from selling books — just a few cents each — has to stretch to cover food, rent, and whatever he can spare for his wife’s medicine. It’s never enough.

“If I stop now… who’s going to take care of her?” he whispers.
