At 91 years old, Mbah Misdi still walks over 10 kilometers every day, carrying nearly 45 kilograms of handmade wooden chairs on his back — hoping to sell just a few pieces to survive.
But for the past month, not a single wooden chair has been sold. Some days, he sits by the roadside from morning until sunset, waiting for a buyer who never comes. Exhausted, he sometimes falls asleep beside his unsold goods, under the scorching heat.
With his frail, hunched body and fading eyesight, every step feels heavier. He only carries one bottle of water with him. “Sometimes kind strangers give me food,” he says softly. “If no one does, I just drink my water and keep walking.”
At home, his wife is ill and unable to work. They live alone in a small, crumbling house. Even when someone gives him a meal, he often saves it for his wife — “I think of her every time I eat,” he whispers.
Despite his struggles, Mbah Misdi never misses his prayers. Each time he hears the call to prayer, he quietly walks to the nearest mosque, asking for strength to keep going — and for a better tomorrow.
