“Miss, would you like to buy firewood? Pay whatever you can… my wife needs medical treatment,” said Grandpa Watir (76), his voice soft, tired, and heavy with sadness.

Since his wife fell ill and could no longer walk, his life has become an endless struggle. She now lies weak in bed, and her eyesight is slowly fading.

Not long ago, while Grandpa Watir was out selling firewood, his wife fell from the bed. Her eyes were bruised and bleeding, yet she still has not been taken for treatment because they have no money.

“Even putting food on the table is hard, dear… if I can buy rice today, I’m already very grateful.”

At his age, Grandpa Watir should be resting peacefully. Instead, he carries 15–20 kilograms of firewood every day, walking up to 15 kilometres just to exchange his strength for a small amount of money.

His ageing body often trembles, his back aches constantly, and now both his legs are itchy and wounded from bearing heavy loads again and again.

Yet Grandpa Watir keeps going. Because if he doesn’t, his wife may go hungry at home and will never be able to receive treatment.

Every time they manage to buy rice, Grandpa Watir and his wife feel deeply thankful. Sometimes, they survive on vegetables picked from the small garden beside their house—no side dishes, no meat—only prayers that they will still have something to eat tomorrow.
