Grandpa Aan, a 70-year-old man, lives with his grandson, Deden, who has hydrocephalus and an underdeveloped body.
Thank you for reading this post, don't forget to subscribe!Every day, Grandpa cares for Deden—feeding him, bathing him, changing his clothes, and cleaning up after him. His mornings start with feeding Deden before heading out to work in the fields.
From digging to tending the crops, Grandpa takes on any odd job he can find. By evening, after returning home around 5 or 6 PM, he continues his routine—cleaning Deden and making sure he is comfortable.
Deden, now 20, has an enlarged head, an underdeveloped right arm, and legs that cannot support his weight. His spine lacks the strength to keep him upright, so he spends his days lying down, dragging himself when he needs to move.
He never plays outside, only watching through the doorway as others enjoy their lives. Sometimes, he talks to himself, mimicking different voices as if having a conversation.
Deden wasn’t born this way—his condition changed at four months old when his head began to swell. Unable to accept it, his father abandoned him and divorced his mother.
His mother, feeling ashamed, chose to remarry and left Deden in the care of his grandfather. Though she visits occasionally, she never helps with his care.
Grandpa once tried seeking medical help for Deden, but doctors feared the surgery wouldn’t be successful, and the cost was too high—thousands of dollars. With no guarantees and no money, Grandpa decided to care for Deden at home instead. He’d rather spend their days together than risk losing Deden in a failed operation.
Their struggles don’t end there. Their home, made of bamboo walls and wooden floors, is falling apart—holes in the roof let in rain, and the weakened floor is breaking under their feet. More than anything, Grandpa wishes for a proper home and a small business so he can support Deden without relying on unstable fieldwork.
