Aulia Nurul Akma’s life changed in an instant. Once a cheerful and bright young girl, she is now bedridden and fighting for her life.
Everything began on 3 August 2023, when Aulia developed a fever and told her mother she was too weak to go to school. She rested at home, but around 2 AM, her condition suddenly worsened — she began shivering uncontrollably, and her body became extremely hot.
Her parents rushed her to a nearby clinic, but before she could receive treatment, Aulia became disoriented and started vomiting. They quickly decided to head straight to the hospital.
On the way there, Aulia experienced repeated seizures. As soon as they arrived, doctors administered anti-seizure medication.
Aulia was extremely weak. She couldn’t respond, and the only word she could utter was “mama.” Doctors suspected that oxygen was not reaching her brain, so they immediately placed an oxygen tube to help her breathe.
While waiting for her blood test results, Aulia suddenly suffered another prolonged seizure that wouldn’t stop. Doctors had no choice but to sedate her around 7 AM on 4 August 2023.
Aulia was admitted to the NICU and given IVIG treatment to calm her nerves and muscles. After two days at Sungai Petani, she was transferred to the PICU at Hospital Alor Setar, where she stayed from 6 August to 24 August 2023.
Doctors later suspected that Aulia was suffering from Influenza A and chronic ANEC, a rare and critical neurological condition. Out of the 10% of patients who get this illness, only 1% recover. Hearing this shattered her family’s hearts. Aulia, who once loved reading, reciting the Quran, and playing joyfully, is now weak, bedridden, and unable to speak as she used to.
What hurts her parents even more is what the doctors said next —
There are three possible outcomes:
- She may recover, but she will never be the same.
- Her condition may remain as it is.
- She may recover… but could suddenly stop breathing at any time.
Despite the pain, her parents remain strong, placing their trust in Allah and doing everything they can to keep Aulia fighting.
Since falling ill, Aulia’s medical costs have risen sharply. Her father’s factory income is barely enough to support their daily needs, let alone the high cost of treatments, medicines, and follow-ups.
Her family is now reaching out, hoping that kind-hearted people can help Aulia receive the care she desperately needs.
