“I hope this orphanage keeps running. Because if not, who will take care of them? Even their families chose to abandon them—” said Grandma Pudji.
True to its name, Grandma Pudji founded a humble orphanage called “Grandma Pudji’s Orphanage”. But this orphanage is a little different from most others— Grandma Pudji takes in eight children with disabilities.
Now in her seventies, Grandma Pudji sincerely cares for them with nothing more than her modest pension.
“In the past, some donors came to this orphanage, but slowly the number dropped to almost none. So, the orphanage’s daily needs come from my pension and a little help from my child, but it’s really not much,” admitted Grandma Pudji.
The children who live here share similar stories—some were left because their families couldn’t care for them, while others were abandoned right at the orphanage’s door without any identity.
The condition of the orphanage is now hanging by a thread. Meals are limited to just rice with instant noodles, or rice with simple clear soup—the “fanciest” menu they can have. On top of that, many children here are sick, including Fajar (17 years old).
Since the age of two, Fajar was left by his grandfather at a special needs school, but on that very same day, he was never picked up again. Now, Fajar suffers from diabetes and other illnesses. He cannot use the national health insurance for treatment because he doesn’t have complete identification documents.
Every day, Fajar must be cared for—his wounds cleaned, bandages changed, treated with whatever little they have. But without urgent medical intervention, the worst possibility is that Fajar could face amputation! Grandma Pudji cannot bear to imagine it.
Dear friends, let us become God’s extended hands for Grandma Pudji and the children with disabilities under her care.
