This is the story of Grandpa Miskun (84), an elderly man who still has to struggle in his old age. Every day, with his weakening body and recurring gout, he cycles around the village selling cassava harvested from his own small garden.
The cassava, sold for only 30 cents per kilogram, often has no buyers. Many days, Grandpa Miskun returns home with nothing. Each morning, he digs up fresh cassava from his farm, then travels from house to house on his old bicycle.
But instead of enjoying a peaceful life in his later years, he faces nonstop hardship. Sometimes, he even has to barter his cassava for rice at a small shop because he cannot bear the hunger any longer.
His simple, run-down house is the only shelter he has—far from any comfort or convenience. To ease his constant pain, he relies only on traditional herbal drinks and basic over-the-counter medicine from a nearby shop.
Many days, Grandpa Miskun can only eat hardened leftover rice from the day before because he doesn’t have money for proper meals.
