“When Minar has seizures, foam comes out of her mouth, and once she even stopped breathing! I panicked and could only cry for help… I wanted to take her to the hospital, but I didn’t have any money at all.” said her mother, Mrs. Iroh

Minar has suffered from malnutrition since she was just 3 months old. Not only that, but now at 18 years old, she also battles Cerebral Palsy (brain paralysis) and epilepsy.

Seizures happen frequently. Because of poverty, Minar has never received proper medical care — only traditional massages and herbal remedies. Her condition has worsened so badly that she now depends on a wheelchair.

When Minar first started having seizures at 3 months old, her mother brought her for physiotherapy. The doctor said that Minar needed long-term treatment and regular therapy to prevent her motor nerves from stiffening and deteriorating.

Unfortunately, their home is deep in the forest, far from the nearest village, making transportation and medical access almost impossible — especially with their financial struggles.

As a housewife, Mrs. Iroh must split her time between earning a living and caring for her children. In their small, humble home, Minar lives with her mother and two younger siblings, while her father has migrated to another area to find better work so Minar can hopefully get treatment.

To survive day to day, Mrs. Iroh walks from village to village selling chickens. The chickens belong to other people, and she only earns less than $1 for each one sold.

“I have no income of my own. The little I earn is just enough to buy rice for my kids. I often cry watching Minar having seizures — I can’t even afford her anti-seizure medicine. I’ve apologized to her countless times because I can’t take her to the hospital… even though I know her life is in danger.” — shared Mrs. Iroh, in tears.
