At just 10 years old, bone cancer has stolen Otniel’s childhood. He was forced to stop going to school, and now he is at risk of losing his leg. To survive, Otniel urgently needs costly treatments and routine chemotherapy.
Otniel Alvaros Mendrofa was once known as a cheerful boy — diligent at school and devoted in worship with his family at the Pentecostal Tabernacle Church in Padang. But today, he can only lie weakly in bed, with multiple medical devices attached to his fragile body.
On the right side of Otniel’s chest, a tube has been inserted to drain fluid from his lungs — because the cancer in his leg has already spread there. He also relies heavily on an oxygen tank, as he often struggles with sudden shortness of breath.
It all began when Otniel frequently complained of severe pain in his left leg. His mother, Mrs. Karniwati, tried bringing him to clinics and even traditional healers, but nothing worked. The pain worsened until finally, he was referred to a larger hospital. After several tests, doctors diagnosed him with osteosarcoma — a rare and aggressive bone cancer.
The news crushed Mrs. Karniwati’s heart. No parent is ever prepared to hear such words. For certainty, they sought another hospital with more advanced facilities, but the results were the same — Otniel had bone cancer and needed to undergo routine chemotherapy.
After six cycles of chemotherapy, Otniel underwent surgery. But only months later, the pain returned. His leg swelled, turned dark, and his condition worsened day by day.
For the past three years, Otniel and his family have endured a grueling battle. His ongoing treatments demand enormous costs. Every valuable item at home has been sold. Their income is no longer enough to cover hospital bills, medicines, and other essential medical needs.
Otniel’s father, Mr. Enafati, works as a delivery man with minimal wages. Meanwhile, his mother takes odd jobs, washing clothes from house to house to make ends meet. Despite their exhaustion and constant financial struggles, they refuse to give up on Otniel’s treatment.
While the main hospital expenses are partially covered by insurance, the family still must pay for many other necessities: travel costs to and from the hospital, special nutrition Otniel requires, and crucial medications that are not included.
