Life is already difficult for healthy individuals, but for a couple where both are suffering from chronic illnesses, it becomes almost unbearable. This is the story of Sandhanaletchumy A/P Balasubramanyam, 49, and her husband, Managarran A/L Pechay, 51 — two people fighting sickness, poverty, and hopelessness, relying only on thin threads of prayer and faith.
Sandhanaletchumy’s health issues began when she was 12, when her legs started to deteriorate. After years of pain, doctors advised her to undergo major surgery. In 2024, her life was shaken again when she was diagnosed with cancer. She has already undergone womb removal surgery, and now doctors say she needs another major operation on her spine. Her suffering is not only physical but mental — at one point, she even felt like ending her life. Every day she depends on costly medication, and even walking has become a painful struggle.
Her husband, Managarran, cannot support her like other husbands because he is also unwell. In 2018, he was involved in an accident that changed his life forever. A brain surgery saved him, but left permanent damage — blindness in his left eye and blurry vision in the right. His physical condition prevents him from working, and the trauma has affected his mental health as well.
The couple lives alone, with no children or family members to help. No stable job, no savings, and no other source of income. They depend entirely on the kindness of others to survive — to buy medicine, pay rent, and afford daily necessities.
Their lives are like a small boat in the middle of a violent storm — no direction, no lifeline, only hoping for a helping hand. A little contribution from us may seem small, but for them, it could be the hope they need to survive another day.
