Vijaya a/p Kuppusamy, 58, and her husband Shunmugam a/l Thulasci, 63, once lived a simple and stable life. They worked hard, supported themselves, and raised their child with love and responsibility.
But everything changed when both of them were struck by serious chronic illnesses that took away their ability to work.
Vijaya has been battling Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) for many years. This autoimmune disease has attacked her internal organs and weakened her bones to the point that both of her hip joints had to be replaced with metal implants. Her vision has deteriorated drastically, and she is now almost completely blind.
SLE also causes severe skin problems, which worsened after she was exposed to biohazard chemicals at her previous workplace. She used to undergo consistent medical treatments including MRI, X-ray, and CT scans, but due to financial difficulties, she had to stop physiotherapy — something crucial for her mobility and independence.
Her husband, Shunmugam, was suddenly diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease during the COVID-19 pandemic. One morning, he woke up unable to stand. His body trembled uncontrollably, his movements slowed almost to a stop, and he appeared as though he had suffered a stroke.
His condition has worsened over time. He can no longer work, his speech is slower, and his cognitive ability is declining. He now depends entirely on others to care for him.
Where they once could support themselves, they now have no income at all. They rely solely on the help of their nephew, who is also struggling financially.
Their situation became even more heartbreaking when their child, who was in Form 3, had to stop schooling because the family could no longer afford basic education costs.
The burden on this family continues to grow. Both Vijaya and Shunmugam require ongoing medical treatment, daily necessities, and transportation to the hospital for follow-up care. Without assistance, they do not know how to continue surviving.
