Once declared comatose, once told his chance of survival was very slim—this is the bitter life faced by 7-year-old Uwais.

For his parents, Mr. Syakban and Mrs. Nurul, nothing is more painful than watching their first child fight for his life, while neighbors cruelly mocked his condition. At just 3 months old, Uwais was diagnosed with four illnesses: pneumonia, brain paralysis, malnutrition, and hypochromic anemia.

“It started with a high fever and severe seizures. He lost consciousness and had to be treated in the PICU with a ventilator just to survive,” said Mrs. Nurul.

The suffering didn’t stop there—Uwais’s illness became a severe complication. Every day he suffers seizures and struggles to breathe. His stiff body has stolen away the childhood he should have spent playing and laughing.

For treatment, Uwais must travel 250 km to the hospital—an expensive journey, not including his special milk and medicines. “Some of his medicines aren’t covered by insurance. Just one type of medicine costs $50 to $100 per week—and he needs many kinds,” Mrs. Nurul said with tears streaming down her face.

For 7 years, Mr. Syakban has worked tirelessly cutting grass for other people’s goats, saving every dollar he could for Uwais’s treatment. Yet it is never enough to cover the mounting hospital bills.
