“I’m sorry, madam. There’s nothing we can do… Wana has no hope of recovery, she will be paralysed for life, and even plastic surgery cannot be performed…” – Doctor

It felt as if the parents’ world collapsed upon hearing the devastating news from the doctor. Who would have thought, the child they had been waiting for 9 months would turn out to be one of the greatest tests from Allah… Wana was born in critical condition, suffering from Hydrocephalus which caused her head to be filled with fluid and enlarged. The doctor had already informed them during pregnancy that there was a tumour in her head.

Recalling the day of Wana’s birth still brings tears to her mother’s eyes. The pain of labour was quickly replaced with heartbreak when she was told about Wana’s condition. The doctor attempted plastic surgery, but due to difficulty locating her blood vessels and severe infection in her head, the surgery could not proceed.

Now at 14 years old, Wana cannot speak, cannot walk, and cannot function like other children her age. Her growth is stunted… She often screams for unknown reasons, cannot sleep, and sometimes has episodes of delirium. Her teeth are severely decayed, and ants often bite the exposed parts of her face. Poor Wana…

The painful truth is this — Wana will be paralysed for life. There is nothing that can be done. Her parents have accepted Allah’s will and are determined to care for her the best they can. But looking after a paralysed child is not easy, especially now that she is entering her teenage years, even though her body remains small. Her mother works as a babysitter, and her father earns a modest income as a palm oil harvester — not nearly enough to cover Wana’s needs.

Wana requires expensive special milk for her nutrition, as well as funds for a special stroller, an electric wheelchair, diapers, ambulance transportation, and her daily medical expenses, which continue to increase day by day.
