“Dad, I’m sorry I still can’t take your place as a Quran teacher. Now I’m only making things harder for you and Mom because I’m sick,” Yuki said softly.
Ever since Yuki first learned to read the Quran, he always dreamed of becoming a Hafiz and one day replacing his father as the neighborhood Quran teacher. But that dream was suddenly cut short when he was diagnosed with a rare blood disorder — Thalassemia — which has been slowly destroying his body.
Yuki, who was already small in size, has now become extremely thin, reduced to just skin and bone. Yet his stomach keeps getting bigger, and no one knows exactly why. His breathing has also become difficult, and he now depends on an oxygen tube to help him breathe.
The only way for Yuki to stay alive longer is through routine blood transfusions every two weeks. But because his condition is already severe, Yuki will need these transfusions for the rest of his life. And each session is expensive — far beyond what his family can afford.
Pak Deden, who used to work solely as a Quran teacher, now struggles to earn extra income by selling fried snacks around the neighborhood. Even though he makes about $3 a day, it’s still not enough to cover Yuki’s biweekly transfusions.
Friends, Yuki’s family has fought so hard to help him recover and reach his dreams again. Would you be willing to help them too?
