Uwes (37) never imagined his life would change in an instant. Twelve years ago, while working as a construction laborer, a heavy crane beam fell on him, crushing his legs beyond repair. The doctors had no choice but to amputate both of them. Losing his legs was just the beginning of a long and painful journey for Uwes.

Without legs and without family, Uwes struggled to survive alone. Shame, pain, and loneliness consumed his days, but he refused to give up. Despite facing pitying looks and skepticism from others, he kept moving forward, determined to prove his worth.

His life took a turn when he discovered bamboo carving. Using only his hands, he crafted intricate handmade items, finding solace and purpose in his work. But life remained tough.

One day, Uwes met Sri, a woman who, like him, lived with physical limitations. Sri had only one hand and no legs, yet her spirit was unbreakable. Through shared struggles and encouragement, love blossomed between them. In March 2024, they got married, finding strength in each other.

Together, Uwes and Sri now craft bamboo carvings—calligraphy, bottle holders, and other handmade items—selling them by the roadside. However, their earnings are meager, sometimes as little as 30,000 IDR a day, and there are days when they sell nothing at all. Without money for transportation, they often crawl for an hour just to get home.

Their only dream is to live independently despite their disabilities. They hope to have their own bamboo carving tools so they no longer have to rent, allowing them to earn a more stable income and afford food.
