“People call me ‘the cripple’… it hurts so much, especially when they kick my cane.” — Karjani (33)

Since he was just 8 months old, Karjani’s life has been full of hardship. Polio left his legs paralyzed and his spine undeveloped. He grew up with a different body — but the deepest wounds came not from his condition, but from the people around him.

His divorced parents never cared. Ashamed of having a disabled child, they forbade him from going to school. He could only watch other children learn, play, and laugh together. Many friends stayed away, while others mocked him — imitating his walk and kicking his cane while calling him “the cripple.”

Now, at 33, Karjani lives with his sister, Satini (35), who is also disabled and relies on a wheelchair. The two support each other, surviving with almost nothing. Every day, Karjani pushes his sister’s wheelchair while selling ice pops on the street. With a cane in one hand, he struggles step by step, stopping every few minutes to rest. Sometimes he falls — but always gets back up.

If they manage to sell all their ice pops, they earn only about $1. But often, no one buys. There were times when they went three days without food, drinking only water to survive. What’s worse, they were nearly kicked out of their parents’ house — and if not for kind villagers defending them, they would’ve been homeless.

Despite all this, Karjani holds on to one small dream: “If I could have my own small business, maybe we wouldn’t have to starve anymore. I also wish to adopt a child someday, so we’ll have someone to care for us when we’re old,” he says softly.

#KindSouls, life has been unbearably hard for Karjani and his sister Satini. They are living proof of how people with disabilities are still often neglected. Let’s help them achieve their simple dream — to live independently and with dignity.
