In a quiet corner of Surabaya stands a simple home for children with special needs. The place is called Karya Kasih Orphanage.

This is where they eat, sleep, learn, and feel the love that many of them never had before.

But on Thursday, 17 September 2025, disaster struck. A fire engulfed the upper floor of the orphanage. Part of the building was destroyed, and several learning materials were burned.

Thankfully, no lives were lost. But the panic sent the children and caregivers running in fear. The children hugged each other while crying, terrified of losing the only home they have.

The fire left some of the children traumatized. They sat in silence afterward, staring blankly, still shaken by what happened.

What’s heartbreaking is that even before the fire, the orphanage struggled to meet basic needs. Food, medical care, and even school expenses for the special-needs children were often too much to afford. Many times, the caretakers had no choice but to feed the children instant noodles…
