For thirty years, Ama Lien Tjie has been walking through life alone. When she embraced Islam decades ago, it was a quiet, personal decision — one that brought her peace, purpose, and strength. But life after that was never easy. Without family by her side, Ama learned to depend only on herself and the kindness of strangers.
Now 61 years old, Ama lives by the river in a fragile makeshift shelter built from discarded scraps and wooden planks. Every morning, she sets out with a small basket of crackers, walking from village to village under the hot sun. She travels nearly ten kilometers a day, hoping to earn a few dollars. But most days, no one buys from her. She returns home exhausted, eating the unsold crackers just to fill her empty stomach.
Her days often end in quiet darkness. When it is time to break her fast, Ama sits alone, with only a few crackers and a sip of rainwater she collects from a plastic container. She has long accepted this as her life — simple, quiet, and lonely. Yet, through it all, she never forgets to pray. With her one old prayer garment, faded and worn, she continues to bow in gratitude, whispering her thanks to God for giving her another day.
Ama’s strength lies not in what she owns, but in what she believes. Her faith is the light that guides her through every hardship, every hunger, and every lonely night. Even when she has nothing left, she still finds something to be thankful for.
But no one should have to face such hardship alone. Ama deserves to live her remaining years with peace, comfort, and dignity.
#KindSouls, let’s come together to help Ama Lien Tjie find warmth, proper meals, and a safe place to rest. Your kindness can remind her that she is not forgotten.
