But in mid-2023, a persistent high fever changed everything. After repeated hospital visits and worsening symptoms, she was rushed to the ER with seizures and loss of consciousness. Doctors diagnosed her with TB meningitis, causing fluid buildup in her brain. She underwent urgent VP Shunt surgery to drain the fluid.
For 28 days, Airyn lay in a coma. Since then, her condition has been fragile. She suffers from malnutrition and requires frequent hospital visits, sometimes 9–10 times a month. When her shunt became blocked, she endured another major surgery to replace it. She now depends on ongoing therapies, monthly check-ups, and specialized care.
Many essentials aren’t covered by insurance including brain vitamins, special formula, medical diapers, AFO therapy shoes, and NGT feeding tubes that must be replaced every two weeks. To pay for her care, the family sold their only motorcycle for just USD $160. Now, they have nothing left.
Her father, Rohmani, works daily as a garbage collector, earning only about USD $0.13 per kilogram of recyclables. Despite exhaustion and meager income, he still prioritizes buying Airyn’s milk and medical supplies.
“My only wish is that even if she never recovers fully, she can live without constant pain,” says Airyn’s mother.
