“Every time Hana struggles to breathe and her body turns blue, my heart shatters. I’m terrified—will I be able to save her?” says Mr. Maulana, Hana’s father, who works as an online motorcycle taxi driver.

Hana, a 3-month-old baby, was born with a congenital heart defect (hole in the heart). Without surgery and intensive medical care, her condition could worsen and lead to heart failure.

As an ojol driver, Mr. Maulana works tirelessly to support his family. But his income barely covers daily meals. When doctors said Hana needed special formula milk that costs $30 per can—only lasting three days and not covered by the national health insurance —he was overwhelmed. Several of Hana’s other treatments are also not covered by the insurance..

“Sometimes I work from morning until the next morning, but the money I bring home still isn’t enough. I don’t know how I’m going to save Hana.”

With such limited income, the medical expenses—reaching into the the thousands of dollars—feel like an impossible dream for this family.
