“Hardly anyone visits our shelter, let alone donors. They’re afraid of the people with mental illness here,” said Mrs. Sulastri with a heavy heart.

Many of the severely mentally ill residents have to be placed in locked cells because they have repeatedly tried to harm others. Meanwhile, those with milder conditions can still interact in the common room, though always with caution.

One of them is Faris, a 10-year-old boy who should be in school but is instead living in the shelter due to the severe mental distress he suffers.

Faris, a child from a broken home, was frequently beaten by his father until he experienced seizures and developed a mental illness. Now, he lives alongside the other residents in the shelter.

The shelter itself is in terrible condition—dirty, rundown, and full of leaks. The building remains half-finished due to a lack of funds, and when heavy rain falls, water floods the rooms, making life even more difficult.

“Donors rarely visit, maybe because they’re afraid of the mentally ill residents and the poor condition of our shelter,” the caretaker said sadly.

Mr. Roihan and Mrs. Sulastri founded this shelter in 2012 out of compassion after seeing so many people with mental illnesses abandoned on the streets. Today, the shelter houses 60 individuals.

Most of them were found wandering in bus terminals and roadsides. Some were even dropped off by their own families, who either could not or did not want to care for them.

But the most heartbreaking issue is the financial struggle. The shelter survives solely on Mr. Roihan’s income as a grass cutter.

To save costs, the residents only receive one meal a day—instant noodles. The food is served in one large basin, shared among everyone, as there aren’t enough resources to cook in larger portions daily.

These 60 individuals were once homeless and abandoned, and though they now have a roof over their heads, they suffer from malnutrition and frequent illness. Their condition is far from humane—who wouldn’t be moved by their suffering?
