So many elderly people out there are still struggling alone just to keep from going hungry, even when they have very little to sell.

One of them is Grandma Manisa (90). Every day, she walks from house to house selling handmade brooms. Her frail, hunched body and unsteady steps don’t stop her from trying to make a living. She braves the scorching sun just for a bite to eat.

Each broom she sells costs less than $1. And even then, she often returns home empty-handed when no one buys her goods. She does this every single day, going from place to place to offer her brooms—no easy task, especially with her physical condition and age.

There’s also Grandma Suryati (73 years old). A glass of her homemade herbal drink sells for only 5,000 rupiah. And if a customer is sick, she often gives it away for free—asking only for a prayer in return.

“I’ve been selling herbal drinks for 10 years. Lately, mine don’t sell well because people prefer big shops. The ingredients are getting harder to find, too, so I can’t make them every day,” she shared.

At times, she’s found asleep in roadside bushes, resting on a piece of cloth she uses to carry her herbal drinks—exhausted, waiting for someone to buy from her.

Sadly, it’s not just these two. Countless elderly folks out there live in poverty, struggling even to buy rice. When they do have money, it’s often only enough for plain rice with salt.
